Questions about Roto Molded
legality of custom 12ga loads?
Hello hunting,
I am wanting to dibble and dabble into making some of my own 12ga loads. What are legal restrictions concerning incendiary loads I want to be aware of in Georgia (USA)? Would I be in the clear if I was to roto-mold a slug with a cavity in the tip, and load it with an incendiary? Are legal restrictions variable upon the amount and power of the incendiary I use, or is the use of an incendiary forbidden in-and-of-itself?
I'm ~thinking~ that the legality may be the amount used, because I am allowed to purchase incendiary loads here in Georgia. But, then again, I wouldn't put it past our government to allow me to purchase fun things, but not be allowed to manufacture them...
No, I am not planning on selling them.
Federal Law - you are restricted to 4oz of propellant/powder in homemade rockets, incendirary and home produced fireworks. Your state could have tougher ones.
The issue with homemade incendiaries - assembling the final chemicals in an oxygen depleted enviorment that also allows the sealant to cure. When you make a standard rifle or pistol 'tracer' rounds - the rear of the projectile is packed with incendiary material and it is then sealed - and it remains in an inert air enviroment for a day or so to cure. When fired, the pressure and burning powder on the rear of the projectile disables the seal - when the prjectile is 75 or so yards out the barrel this contact with air ignites the incendiary material and you get a visible tracer.
This does not work in a 12ga. In a typical 12ga the payload is separated from the hot powder gases by the wad. A secondary means of ignition is uesd.
The biggest problem working with incendary devices is dealing with flamable metals. These produce Class D fires that can never be extinguished - they basically need to burn themselves out. Get a piece of this stuck to your hand that is ignited - you need to cut it out or wait until it burns through you hand - waving you hand and screaming only prevents it from falling off and makes things worse. Imersing in cold water only makes it worse.
My advice. Go volunteer for a weekend at a Shriners Burn Center Hospital. There you will find no shortage of young kids and teenage boys who have melted off half their face or lost an arm or two 'playing' with this material. Hopefully, this will eiether discourage your adventurese into this stuff - or - convince you to pony up for the $2000+ in personal protection equipment to do it right.
Hope this helps.
